New England Patriots 2018 re-draft: What would Bill Belichick change?
Round 2: Orlando Brown Jr., OT, Oklahoma
Original Pick: Duke Dawson, DB, Florida
In the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots added Florida defensive back Duke Dawson to the mix. Dawson suffered an early-season hamstring injury that landed him on IR. He was healthy enough to return to the Patriots’ 53-man roster but never saw the field as a rookie. His fate is far from secure, but the Dawson pick does not look great at the moment.
Instead of drafting Dawson, we try to account for not landing Wynn here. Wynn is undoubtedly an important part of the New England Patriots going forward so replacing him and ignoring it seems silly. Here, the Pats land offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr.
Brown slid down draft boards after a horrendous performance at the combine. The Baltimore Ravens stopped his slide when they took him in the middle of the third round, and so far, he has been a nice find for them.
Brown took over as the Ravens’ starting right tackle about halfway through last season and played well. He is a massive man who has obvious power in his game. His foot quickness and overall athleticism are lacking, but he uses his power to maul defenders in the run game and proved to be a better pass protector than anyone expected as a rookie.
The Patriots were able to get elite production out of a massive left tackle in Trent Brown but lost him in free agency. Perhaps they could find something similar with another massive offensive tackle in Orlando Brown?
