Kansas City Chiefs should take a flyer on veteran back Darren Sproles
What would it hurt? The Kansas City Chiefs should take a flyer on veteran running back Darren Sproles. He would be an ideal fit in their offense.
The Kansas City Chiefs are not exactly loaded at the running back position. Damien Williams played well down the stretch last season and should be a solid starter for the Chiefs. However, their options behind him leave plenty to be desired. With Carlos Hyde, Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson providing the depth, there is room for improvement here.
At this point in the offseason, there are not exactly many options on the open market. If the Chiefs want to legitimately improve their running back situation, they must get a little creative here. Despite his advanced age, Darren Sproles feels like a strong fit.
The 36-year-old Sproles has been working out and does not appear to be headed toward retirement any time soon. I think the Kansas City Chiefs should give Sproles a call and strongly consider him as a change-of-pace depth option.
Sproles is one of the quickest and most elusive backs in recent memory. He is a fantastic playmaker with the ball in his hands and can create separation in open space. His ability as an inside runner is limited at this point of his career, but Sproles can still make an impact in an offense when given space to work with.
No coach in the NFL does a better job at creating space for his players than Andy Reid. Sproles is obviously not quite as dynamic as he once was, but he certainly still has some elusiveness in the open field. He is also a reliable pass catcher who can create separation with a variety of route.
Simply put, Reid is the ideal coach to get the most out of Sproles at this point in his career. Reid would be able to showcase him in the passing game and mix him in on outside runs as well.
Damien Williams is a nice back who the Kansas City Chiefs can count on, but Sproles just feels like a strong fit for their offense. He is an ideal change-of-pace back who does not need much playing time, but can make an impact when he is on the field. Why not give him a chance?
