Buffalo Bills have found a group of receivers who fit Josh Allen well
The Buffalo Bills may not have the most talented group of wide receivers in the NFL, but they have found a group that fits well in their offense.
The wide receiver position stands out as an obvious position of need on the Buffalo Bills roster. The collection of players that have assembled at the wide receiver position leaves plenty to be desired and it is important for them to improve at the position as time goes along, or quarterback Josh Allen probably is not going to develop properly.
While the game-breaking talent is not necessarily there, the Bills do have a group of receivers that fit their offense and their young quarterback well. When it comes down to it, they have done a nice job of using what they have to work with.
Let’s start with the newcomers. This offseason, the Bills signed two veteran receivers, John Brown and Cole Beasley. Both Brown and Beasley are expected to play major roles with the Buffalo Bills offense and pair nicely with Allen in the passing game.
Brown is one of the fastest players in the entire NFL and is a true weapon in the deep passing game. He is an extremely explosive receiver who has the raw speed to dominate any cornerback who tries to cover him in true man-to-man coverage. This obviously pairs well with Allen’s extremely strong arm and should help open up opportunities for others in the offense.
Beasley is one of the premier slot receivers in the entire NFL. He is a quick and decisive route runner who knows how to create separation against man coverage and find space against the zone. He is an incredibly reliable player who excels in the short to intermediate range. I could see Beasley quickly becoming a reliable safety valve for Allen.

Robert Foster exploded onto the scene with the Buffalo Bills as a rookie last season. He went undrafted out of Alabama, but Foster showed an impressive overall skill-set and grew into one of the primary receivers in the Bills’ offense.
In particular, Foster was impressive as a deep receiver. He finished 2018 with 27 receptions for 541 yards and three touchdowns. His 20.0 yards per reception stands out as an impressive number. Foster’s ability as a deep receiver is an obvious fit with Allen’s big arm and he could be even more dangerous with Brown lined up opposite of him.
Lastly, we are going to take a look at Zay Jones, who took a nice step as a second-year player last season. In 2018, Jones piled up 56 receptions for 652 yards and seven touchdowns. Jones is not a particularly impressive deep threat like Foster and Brown, nor is a shifty slot receiver like Beasley. That being said, he is a smooth and athletic receiver who can excel at all levels.
Jones is a reliable target for Allen in the passing game. He can create space against all coverage and has a knack for making catches along the sideline. He does most of his damage in the short to intermediate range and has some nice upside as a red zone target. Jones has better size than the other receivers on the Bills’ roster, which could obviously come in handy as the field shrinks.
The Buffalo Bills still need to find a true number one receiver (luckily the position is loaded in the 2020 NFL Draft), but this is a nice group of players who could help Allen take the next step. When it comes down to it, the foursome of Brown, Foster, Beasley and Jones can create challenges for the defense. This is not a perfect group, but they have done a nice job of finding players who fit.
