Would the Indianapolis Colts take Russell Wilson over Andrew Luck if they could re-do the 2012 NFL Draft?

The Indianapolis Colts had the easiest possible decision to make at the time of the 2012 NFL Draft. There was no question that Andrew Luck was the consensus top player and everything else was a competition for second best.

Russell Wilson, in particular, was somewhat of an afterthought in a draft class that has since become famous for its production of starting/star caliber quarterbacks.

So if the Colts had the opportunity to go back in time with the benefit of foresight (hindsight?), would they change it up and go with Wilson over Luck?

I’m not so sure, but NBC Sports would.

Luck has dragged the Colts to the playoffs and in 2014 he dragged them to the AFC Championship game as well.

Wilson was a major asset for the Seahawks from the moment he stepped onto the field, but there’s no question he had the better team around him early on and that contributed to his two straight Super Bowl appearances and one win.

Now, Wilson is the one carrying a young/poor roster and Luck seems to have the great talent around him.

We’ll see what happens with the tables turned.

Both players have received new mega contracts from their respective teams. Wilson, in fact, is on his third deal.

Luck has struggled with injuries from being hit so much, while Wilson has not had durability issues at all.

It’s really hard to find fault in anyone’s logic or reasoning for having one of these guys over the other. They are both phenomenal talents and the one thing PFT got right is that they should have been the top two picks in that particular draft class.

I remember evaluating that class for NFL Mocks at the time, and writing about the fact that if Wilson were two or three inches taller, he would have been a candidate for a top five or top 10 pick.

It’s become abundantly clear seven years later that Wilson was worthy of being a number one NFL Draft pick for someone, but I think we’re splitting hairs saying he should have been taken over Luck.

Luck is a player who elevates his team to championship level just the same as Wilson.
