Round 4: Desmond King, DB, Iowa

Original Pick: Jehu Chesson, WR, Michigan

Jehu Chesson never made much of an impact with the Chiefs and was waived following his rookie season with the team. If they could make this pick again, the Chiefs would obviously look in another direction.

In this re-draft, they end up with a division rival, Los Angeles Chargers defensive back Desmond King, whose slide in the 2017 NFL Draft I will never understand. King was a dominant cornerback in college at Iowa, being named an All-American twice and winning the Jim Thorpe Award for the best defensive back in college football in 2015.

Due to size concerns and a poor 40-yard dash time, King slipped in the draft, before finally getting scooped up by the Chargers in the fifth round (151st overall). King has been a full-time starter and has grown into a dynamic playmaker on the Chargers’ defense, starring for the team at the nickel back position.

In the modern NFL, the slot cornerback is a starting defensive position. Teams need four or even five cornerbacks who can play and make an impact. King is never going to be a shut-down cornerback on the outside, but he is the best nickel corner in the entire NFL. That has obvious value.

The secondary is a clear position of need for the Kansas City Chiefs and adding an All-Pro talent like King would undoubtedly help them in that area.
