Cleveland Browns 2017 NFL re-draft: Patrick Mahomes goes no. 1
Top pick: Patrick Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech
Original pick: Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M
If the 2017 NFL Draft could be re-done, there’s no question who would be the top overall pick.
It’s funny though, because at the time, everyone evaluating this class was highly questioning all of the quarterbacks, including and especially the Browns.
The Browns ended up passing on a QB class which already has three Pro Bowl players (Mitch Trubisky, DeShaun Watson, Mahomes) and an MVP in the former Texas Tech star.
In hindsight, there’s no doubt Mahomes had top overall pick qualities.
Strong arm? Check.
Intangibles? Check.
Athleticism? Check.
Ability to improvise and make throws off-platform? Check.
The Browns could have easily used their draft capital to even move back into the top 10 and take Mahomes after taking Myles Garrett, but they didn’t do it. Instead, they waited until round two for DeShone Kizer.
All is well that ends well, but it took one win in two seasons to get the Browns Baker Mayfield when they could have had Pat Mahomes in 2017.
