Which Atlanta Falcons have their jobs on the line after the 2019 NFL Draft?

The Atlanta Falcons did a great job of finding impact players in the 2019 NFL Draft. However, in order to make room for these players, somebody has to go. There are many players on every NFL team who will get cut as they make their way from 90 players down to 53 by the end of the preseason.

End of the roster decisions are always difficult to make, but these three Atlanta Falcons players particularly have an uphill battle ahead of them.

RB Brian Hill

After the Falcons drafted Qadree Ollison in the fifth and Marcus Green in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, there isn’t much room for Brian Hill. Ollison definitely has a chance to win the third-string running back spot behind Devonta Freeman and Ito Smith. Green, on the other hand, will predominantly be used on special teams, but could figure into the running back mix at times.

Hill was on the roster for Atlanta in 2017 but did not see any playing time. In 2018, Hill saw limited action and that was only because of injuries to the other backs on the team. He only tallied 157 yards on 20 attempts.

At best, Hill would be the fourth-string back for the Atlanta Falcons in 2019. It is unlikely that he ends up on the roster to start the season.

CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson

The cornerback position for the Falcons is an interesting one, as changes were made during the offseason. Desmond Trufant is still the number one corner, but beyond that, it’s a much younger unit with Robert Alford and Brian Poole both let go. This leads me to think that Blidi Wreh-Wilson is the next to go.

Isaiah Oliver has moved into the second corner spot alongside Trufant, after a strong rookie season. Then you have Damontae Kazee who can play corner and safety. Kazee was tremendous for the Atlanta Falcons in 2018 and should be their slot cornerback going forward.

After that, the Falcons have two talented rookies to provide quality depth and long-term upside. Kendall Sheffield was drafted in the fourth round and Jordan Miller was selected in the fifth. Both are talented cornerbacks with obvious upside going forward. There simply is not enough room for Wreh-Wilson on the roster.

DL Chris Odom

The defensive end position for the Falcons is a little shaky. Even with that being said, I believe Chris Odom is the odd man out of the group. On the left defensive end side, Vic Beasley is the starter and rookie John Cominsky, who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2019 draft, gets the backup spot.

As for the right defensive end side, Takkarist McKinley is the starter with Adrian Clayborn being the obvious backup option. Clayborn comes back to the Falcons after one season playing in New England. He adds veteran presence and much-needed pass rush ability.

Even if the Falcons were to try and use Odom in a rotation at both defensive end and tackle, I do not see him making the finally 53-man roster with their obvious depth at defensive tackle. When it comes down to it, Odom is an opening week roster longshot.
