2020 NFL Draft: NFL reportedly considers Justin Herbert top prospect
Oregon quarterback and 2020 NFL Draft prospect Justin Herbert may be a rare talent.
It was a major surprise when Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert did not enter the 2019 NFL Draft. He was considered one of the best quarterback prospects in last year’s draft but decided to return to college instead of taking the leap.
Herbert will be one of the most exciting players to watch in college football this season and is undoubtedly one of the best prospects in the 2020 NFL draft class. However, could he be a rare talent who is one of the premier quarterback prospects who we have seen in recent years? The league certainly seems to think so.
According to Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network, “Scouts ranked Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert as the top NFL prospect from the senior class in meetings last month. Herbert received one of the highest grades by any senior from the past decade.”
A huge majority of premier prospects enter the NFL draft prior to their senior seasons. Herbert staying at Oregon for his final season makes him a rare commodity for a player of his caliber. Anything can happen between now and the 2020 NFL Draft, but I am not too surprised to see that he is being so highly valued by the league right now.
It is easy to see why the NFL likes Herbert so much. He has an impressive combination of size, mobility and arm talent that will undoubtedly work at the next level. He is also an accurate passer who does a particularly nice job of putting the proper touch on his passes.
Herbert does have some work to do on the mental side of the game and that is probably a major reason why he returned to school. He struggles to read through progressions, oftentimes panicking if his first option is not available. Herbert also has some issues when dealing with pressure. However, these are all things that can be improved.
Justin Herbert is far from a perfect player, but he is well on his way to becoming one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2020 NFL Draft. He is a truly special talent who is undoubtedly going to impress as a senior at Oregon and at the next level.
