5. David Montgomery, RB, Chicago Bears

David Montgomery is one of the most obvious candidates to have fantasy football success as a rookie. The Chicago Bears moved on from running back Jordan Howard this offseason, trading him away to the Philadelphia Eagles. They then traded up to snag Montgomery in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Howard was a solid and productive back for the Bears, but he never fit head coach Matt Nagy’s offense well. On the other hand, Montgomery is an ideal fit.

Montgomery does not have elite breakaway speed, but he is a quick and relatively elusive back who can make defenders miss in open space. He also has strong power at the point of attack and elite contact balance, showing the ability to maintain his feet at the end of runs a huge majority of the time.

The Iowa State product is also a strong pass catcher out of the backfield who shows good route running skills for a running back, catches the ball well and can create yardage after the catch. He is a versatile weapon who will benefit from space created by Nagy in the Bears’ offense.

Tarik Cohen will obviously still play a major role for the Bears, but his lack of size does not bode well for his chances of becoming a true three-down back. I expect Montgomery to quickly become the featured back for the Bears and could easily become a major value at his current ADP (4.03).
