Re-Drafting the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft
2. Philadelphia Eagles: Carson Wentz, QB
Original Pick: Wentz
After the Rams traded up for the first overall pick, the Philadelphia Eagles traded up to snag the second pick of the 2016 NFL Draft. The trade was clearly made with the selection of a quarterback in mind and Carson Wentz ended up being the prize.
When on the field, Wentz has been the best quarterback in the 2016 NFL draft class. He is a career 63.7% passer for 10,152 yards, 70 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. He was a true NFL MVP candidate during the 2017 season but missed the stretch run with a devastating knee injury.
Unfortunately, injuries have been a major story in Wentz’s career. His torn ACL and LCL forced him to miss the Eagles’ Super Bowl run in 2017 and the first two weeks of last year. In December of 2018, Wentz suffered a spinal compression fracture, forcing him to miss the rest of that season. We all hate to see it, but injury-shortened seasons are becoming a trend for Wentz.
All of that being said, he is obviously one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL. Wentz is a gifted playmaker who can make any throw on the football field. If he can just stay healthy, he is undoubtedly good enough to carry the Eagles to a Super Bowl title.
Philadelphia just signed Wentz to a long-term contract extension. Despite the injuries, I do not see the Eagles changing the selection of Wentz even if they could. With him still on the board at number two, the choice is easy.
