Re-Drafting the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft
15. Cleveland Browns: DeForest Buckner, DL
Original Pick: WR Corey Coleman
This was the trade down draft for the Cleveland Browns. They trade down from the second pick to the eighth and then again to number 15. With the 15th pick, Cleveland finally made a selection, snagging Baylor wide receiver Corey Coleman, who ended up being a major bust. Luckily, Browns’ fans can look back at this pick and laugh now. At one point, you know it wasn’t very funny.
Instead of Coleman, the Browns address their defensive line here. DeForest Buckner was one of the most interesting players in the 2016 NFL Draft. His combination of size, power and athleticism is impressive and he has really started to come into his own as an interior rusher. The Browns add an impact defender to help with their massive rebuild.
16. Detroit Lions: Sheldon Rankins, DT
Original Pick: OT Taylor Decker
Sheldon Rankins is a quick and explosive interior rusher who came into his own with the Saints in 2018. Last season, Rankins finished with eight sacks, 15 quarterback hits and 12 tackles for loss. He was a disruptor on the interior, creating pressure in the pass rush and making plays against the run.
The Detroit Lions could certainly use a guy like Rankins. They took defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson later in this draft, but fill this need with a much better player in the first here.
