Giants select Josh Allen, EDGE, Kentucky instead of Daniel Jones

What an off season for the New York Giants. Not only did they make two of the most baffling selections in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, but they also traded away a true revolutionary wide receiver when they sent Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns.

Their selection of Clemson defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence at 17 was pretty bad, but taking Duke quarterback Daniel Jones is nearly indefensible.

Jones had a decent college career, but he heavily benefitted from the offense that he played in. David Cutcliffe was brilliant with Jones, consistently putting him in a position to succeed. We simply cannot count on that to continue at the next level. He is a mediocre quarterback prospect who was completely over-drafted when the Giants took him at number six overall.

Instead of Jones, the Giants should have taken Kentucky edge rusher Josh Allen. This team desperately lacks impact defensive linemen who can get after the quarterback and Allen would have certainly fit the bill.

Allen is an explosive rusher who consistently wins with speed and athleticism. He bends around the edge with ease, showcases an impressive inside counter move and can set the edge well against the run. Allen also shows some real potential when asked to drop in coverage.

Simply put, Allen is an elite-level defensive prospect who the Giants could have built their defense around. Instead, they took a mediocre quarterback prospect who will be a below average starter, at best.
