Redskins select Amani Hooker, S, Iowa instead of Bryce Love
Many considered the Washington Redskins to have one of the best overall classes in the 2019 NFL Draft. Their ability to snag both Dwayne Haskins and Montez Sweat in the first round was brilliant and should pay off in a big way.
Snagging Haskins’ Ohio State teammate, wide receiver Terry McLaurin, is also extremely intriguing. Washington separated themselves from the pack on day three of the draft, making seven selections to add to their crop of talent on the roster.
Offensive lineman Wes Martin, linebacker Cole Holcomb and wide receiver Kelvin Harmon stood out as particularly impressive picks on the last day of the draft. However, their selection of running back Bryce Love in the fourth round stood out as questionable.
Love was once one of the premier running backs in college football, but he was not as impressive last season and is coming off of a torn ACL. It seems unlikely that Love will be as explosive as he once was on the field. Instead of taking Love, the Redskins should have made Iowa safety Amani Hooker a priority.
Hooker is a smart and talented safety prospect who shows impressive man-to-man coverage skills. He defends tight ends well, can make plays in the box and has impressive overall ball skills. Hooker is a talented safety who would be a welcomed addition to the Redskins’ secondary.
