Miami Dolphins 2019 NFL Draft Picks:

Round 1 (13): Christian Wilkins, DT, Clemson
Round 3 (78): Michael Deiter, OG, Wisconsin
Round 5 (151): Andrew Van Ginkel, EDGE, Wisconsin
Round 6 (202): Isaiah Prince, OT, Ohio State
Round 7 (233): Chandler Cox, FB, Auburn
Round 7 (234): Myles Gaskin, RB, Washington

Draft Pick Redo: Jaylon Ferguson, EDGE, Louisiana Tech instead of Michael Deiter

The Miami Dolphins had an interesting 2019 NFL Draft weekend. Taking defensive tackle Christian Wilkins in the first was a solid move that will undoubtedly help their rebuild going forward. They also did some gymnastics with their second-round pick, turning it into a 2020 second rounder and quarterback Josh Rosen.

These were definitely two strong moves for the rebuilding Dolphins. However, if we are being honest, I was not too impressed with the rest of their draft. Their third-round selection of offensive guard Michael Deiter was not terrible. Deiter is a solid offensive lineman who can compete for playing time right away.

However, that is not the direction I would’ve gone. Instead, the Dolphins should have taken Jaylon Ferguson, an edge rusher out of Louisiana Tech.

Ferguson was absolutely dominant in college, piling up an FBS-record 45 sacks throughout his four-year career. He is not the most fluid player on the edge, but he is extremely powerful at the point of attack and is quicker than you would expect. He is strong against the run and shows an impressive pass rush repertoire. The Dolphins have an obvious need on the edge and Ferguson would’ve fit well in Brian Flores‘ defensive system.

The Baltimore Ravens got a steal when they took Ferguson in the third round. I would’ve liked the Dolphins’ draft much more if they had taken Ferguson instead of Deiter.
