The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are giving quarterback Jameis Winston one last opportunity to prove himself. The former first overall pick is entering the final year of his rookie contract and will have to drastically improve his play in 2019 if he expects the Bucs to commit to him for the long term.

Winston is a talented passer who shows legitimate playmaking ability at times. However, he is an extremely inconsistent player who simply turns the ball over far too often. Winston has never finished an NFL season with fewer than 11 interceptions, and his lowest total of 11 came during an injury-shorted 2018 season. Simply put, Winston is reckless with the ball and has proven to struggle with reading defenses.

Winston will have an opportunity to correct himself this season, playing under Bucs’ new head coach/offensive coordinator combination of Bruce Arians and Byron Leftwich. Arians has had a lot of success getting the most out of his quarterbacks in the past and his vertical passing attack would seem to fit Winston’s skill set well. That being said, it is up to Winston to make the most out of this opportunity and I simply do not have confidence that he is going to improve as a player.

After this season, the Buccaneers are going to have to make a tough decision on Winston. Is he good enough to commit to with a big, long-term contract? So far, he simply has not shown enough. If he does not show significant improvement in 2019, this decision will be easy. Cut bait with Winston and find a new franchise quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft.
