The San Francisco 49ers have the NFL’s best kept secret heading into the 2019 season. Teams need to be on their toes facing this squad.

The San Francisco 49ers have the NFL’s best kept secret going into the 2019 season, but the rest of the NFL will be taking notice soon enough.

I’m going to keep the pleasantries and hyperbole to a minimum and just tell you what this is, because the majority of this post is going to be talking about how amplified these numbers can be going into the 2019 NFL season.

According to Sharp Football Stats, the San Francisco 49ers ranked 4th in the NFL in explosive run plays (runs of 10 or more yards) and 3rd in the NFL in explosive pass plays (pass plays of 15 or more yards).

These rankings are based on the percentage of plays that ended up being ‘explosive’, so the 49ers didn’t just have a bunch of 10-yard runs just because they ran the ball all the time, and in the same way, they didn’t just have a bunch of 15-yard pass plays because they threw every down.

What do these stats tell us? They tell us that the San Francisco 49ers in 2018 were one of the most consistently explosive offenses in the NFL.

Hard to believe, isn’t it?

The 49ers went through three quarterbacks last season, including CJ Beathard and Nick Mullens. Their number one receiver outside of tight end George Kittle was Kendrick Bourne.

If you needed any evidence of how good Kyle Shanahan is as a head coach, we have it right there.

The 49ers’ offense was a complete shambles last year in terms of the injuries they suffered all over the place, but the foundation has been set over the last two years and the 49ers are getting significant reinforcements on that side of the ball this season.

QB: Nick Mullens/CJ Beathard >> Jimmy Garoppolo
RB: Matt Breida/Alfred Morris >> Tevin Coleman/Jerick McKinnon
WR: Kendrick Bourne, Pierre Garcon, Trent Taylor >> Dante Pettis, Deebo Samuel, Jalen Hurd
TE: George Kittle >> 2019 George Kittle

So you’re telling me an offense with the ‘before’ players ranked in the top four both in explosive pass plays and run plays? And they’re getting all of these new players and upgrades?

The 49ers have a diverse group of playmakers offensively and with the additions of Tevin Coleman, Deebo Samuel, and Jalen Hurd specifically, we’re going to see the fullness of this offense from Shanahan.

It’s a make-or-break year for John Lynch and Shanahan and it’s hard to imagine them not taking a huge step forward with such an effective offensive scheme and these new players to make it look even better.
