2020 NFL Draft: Iowa OT Tristan Wirfs scouting report
Scouting report for one of the top offensive line prospects in the 2020 NFL Draft, Tristan Wirfs out of Iowa.
It is still early, but the offensive line class of the 2020 NFL Draft appears to be strong. There are many interesting potential first-round prospects, with Iowa offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs being among them.
Wirfs was a four-star prospect out of Mt. Vernon, Iowa who was selected to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl following his high school career. He became Iowa’s starting right tackle about halfway through his true freshman season, had immediate success and continued to play at a high level as a sophomore.

Wirfs is a mean and nasty offensive lineman who shows tremendous power at the point of attack. He has solid get-off at the snap, can quickly get in position and shows fantastic hand usage in the run game. Wirfs consistently showcases a strong punch and elite grip strength that allows him to consistently control and steer opposing defenders as a run blocker.
He is also an extremely competitive player who consistently looks to dominate his opponent and drive him downfield through the whistle.
The Iowa right tackle does not possess elite foot quickness, but he moves well for a man of his size and is a fundamentally sound player who is seemingly always able to get in the proper position. Wirfs shows enough functional athleticism to take care of blocks at the second level and in space.
While his run blocking is dominant, Wirfs has some work to do as a pass protector. He will lose at times against pure speed off of the edge but consistently keeps a strong base to handle power rushers. His technique is strong in pass pro, commonly doing a nice job to establish half-man relationship, keeping strong pad level and using great hand placement.
Simply put, Tristan Wirfs is an extremely gifted offensive tackle prospect who has massive upside at the next level. If he can improve his pass protection a bit during his junior season, Wirfs could easily become a first-round prospect for the 2020 NFL Draft. He is already a dominant run blocker and flashes the skill-set to be a strong pass protector as well.
Iowa knows how to develop offensive linemen, consistently preparing them for success in the NFL. Wirfs is not only a talented player, but he will undoubtedly be coached the right way and be prepared to compete at the next level as soon as he decides to take the plunge.
