The Washington Redskins are on the right track

A quick review suggests the Washington Redskins could see as many as 14 of the 28 players drafted over the past three years begin the 2019 season in the starting lineup. Ten more look to be very strong backups.

It should also be noted that there are only two teams in the NFL that still have every draft pick from the last three years on their roster. Those teams are the Washington Redskins and the Los Angeles Chargers. That is an impressive accomplishment, especially when compared to other teams around the league.

The Dallas Cowboys stand out here. During the same time period, the Cowboys have seen two draftees go to other teams and four are out of the league altogether. The Denver Broncos are another team that has already lost five draft picks since 2017, three of them completely out of the NFL. The Minnesota Vikings have seen a stunning eight of their draft picks from the last two years move on, four to other teams and four more out of the league completely.

The Washingon Redskins still having every one of their 28 picks from the past three years on their roster indicates that they are correctly identifying talent in the draft and doing a great job of developing that talent.

Redskins owner Dan Snyder deserves some credit for simply sitting back and letting his guys work. Gruden’s job is to make sure everyone knows what he wants, or what he needs to win. Doug Williams provides the insight of a champion and knows as much about football as anyone you’ll find anywhere.

Next. Which teams came out on top of the 2019 NFL Draft?. dark

I can’t see Bruce Allen having a tremendous amount of input into the selection process, but as the general manager, he is the guy that gives the final approval. Credit him for not getting in the way, if nothing else. Kyle Smith is the guy that puts the cards on the table. Smith is the boy genius of the group. It’s his job to say, these guys are good, these guys are great or these guys can’t play. Whatever is happening in Washington, they are on the right track. This franchise has clearly found a draft formula that works.
