The evil genius is back at it again. In this piece, we take a look at the New England Patriots 2019 NFL Draft: Belichick being Belichick.

The New England Patriots 2019 NFL Draft class was more of Bill Belichick being Bill Belichick. So, let’s just list the picks to start:

  • Round 1, pick 32: N’Keal Harry, WR, Arizona State
  • Round 2, Pick 45: Joejuan Williams, DB, Vanderbilt
  • Round 3, Pick 77: Chase Winovich, DE, Michigan
  • Round 3, Pick 87: Damien Harris, RB, Alabama
  • Round 3, Pick 101: Yodny Cajuste, OT, West Virginia
  • Round 3, Pick 118: Hjalte Froholdt, OL Arkansas
  • Round 4, Pick 133: Jarrett Stidham, QB, Auburn
  • Round 5, Pick 159: Byron Cowart, DL, Maryland
  • Round 5, Pick 163: Jake Bailey, P, Stanford
  • Round 7, Pick 252: Ken Webster, CB, Ole Miss

All in all, the Patriots ended up with 10 picks after starting the draft with 12. But more importantly, they had six picks in the first 120 selections of this draft. Which is more than any other team in the league. For comparison, The Miami Dolphins had 6 picks total.

So what exactly makes this draft so Belichickian? Well, here are three reasons off the top:

 1. Players seemingly falling right to him

I haven’t figured out if Bill Belichick is just smarter than everybody else or just way more lucky than anybody else in this business, but I’m beginning to think it’s a little bit of both.

I mean seriously, how does Chase Winovich fall to pick 77? I mean seriously, how does Yodny Cajuste fall to 101? I mean seriously, how does Jarrett Stidham fall to 133?

2. Randomness

Belichick, more than any other decision maker, has been consistently inconsistent. Meaning, you just never know what the guy’s gonna do. Last year, they took Sony Michel, running back out of Georgia, with their second pick. If you can find me the one person that predicted they’d use a value pick in the third round to take another running back (Alabama’s Damien Harris), I’d be shocked.

Then there’s that JoeJuan Willaims pick, which is just so Belichick. Williams is a defensive back that no one really quite knows what to do with, except I’m sure Bill.

3. A punter just to rub it in

I know special teams is one of the three phases during a football game, but Belichick taking a punter with a fifth-round pick is just about hilarious.

Drafting a punter, let alone in the fifth round, may seem astronomically insane to any other fan base. Not in New England. In Bill we trust.
