Hakeem Butler, WR Iowa State: Drafted #103

It’s funny how the disparity between public opinion and the league’s opinion never seem to be on an offensive lineman, probably because not too many viral tweeters are giving “My top-10 offensive guards” lists out. So, if there’s no group opinion being given, there isn’t any disparity.

It seems to primarily be the highlight positions. The positions and guys we can show 60-second clips of them where they Moss a guy or a running back takes it for 80 yards. And boy if Hakeem Butler isn’t that guy exactly. This is a young man, whose career at Iowa State was littered with miraculous one-handed catches over defenders, and runs after the catch where he’s throwing DB’s off him like flies on his way to scoring.

So, it’s easy to see where the difference comes. Look, I’m not saying every person on Draft Twitter doesn’t watch game film, but I am saying every person on Draft Twitter was infatuated with the highlights from Butler. Never were they given the issues in his game.

Again, this is another guy that received insane amounts of social media hype, so much so the Colts’ Twitter account let their fans believe he was an option in the back end of the first round.

He actually went in the 4th.

The difference between projection and selection with Metcalf seemed to come from team’s being given additional medical information, whereas I think the Butler confusion came from an overload of highlights and hype from Social Media.

In fact, when asked about Hakeem Butler during the draft, Daniel Jeremiah responded in a tweet  saying “the league was never as high on Butler as the Internet.”
