The New York Giants made a shocking move at the top of this draft to take Duke quarterback Daniel Jones, a product of the Manning passing academy and the coaching of David Cutcliffe at Duke.
Jones has many mannerisms of a Manning, but the athleticism of a Ryan Tannehill. He’s a unique type of player but many dislike this pick because Jones was more of a mid-late 1st round value if at all at the quarterback position. What kind of leadership skills does this kid have?
The Giants have a post-Manning plan in place now.
Dexter Lawrence was acquired with the pick the Giants got in the Odell Beckham Jr. trade with Cleveland. I don’t love the value there, but he’s going to be a tough interior player to defend against.
Deandre Baker was not my favorite corner in this class, but it’s hard to argue with no touchdowns allowed in two seasons of SEC play.
Oshane Ximines is an interesting small school pass rush project, and Julian Love was one of my favorite values on day three of the NFL Draft.
Ryan Connelly and Darius Slayton will compete for special teams and backup roles right away.
Corey Ballentine was involved a terrifying shooting which killed one of his teammates — Dwane Simmons — and will make a full recovery. Just a horrible situation.
The Giants’ draft as a whole doesn’t look bad, but the jury is out on their first-round picks. We’ll see how Dave Gettleman did and if Jones plays any this year.
