Round 7 / Pick 242: Ben Burr-Kirven, LB, Washington

Ben Burr-Kirven has been the glue that held the Washington defense together for the past couple of seasons. Burr-Kirven made 260 tackles during the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

He also added 3 sacks, 6 forced fumbles, and 3 interceptions during that span. The biggest knock on Burr-Kirven is his size. at 6’0, 220 he is very undersized for a prototypical middle linebacker in the NFL. He has drawn comparisons to Titans’ linebacker Jayon Brown who had a very productive season in 2018 as an undersized linebacker.

Many teams have left Burr-Kirven off of their draft board altogether because they believe his size is a big concern and his stats were heavily padded by Washington’s defensive scheme.

The Chargers signed veteran linebacker Thomas Davis Sr. in free agency. The signing will bring great leadership to the Chargers defense that will help them out throughout the 2019 season.

At 35 years old, it is unknown how much Davis has left in the tank, but for this season, he could be an excellent mentor for Burr-Kirven. Along with the help of Davis, Burr-Kirven will benefit from playing behind Chargers’ middle linebacker Denzel Perryman.

Like Burr-Kirven, Perryman is also a shorter linebacker, but he is always in the right position to make plays and he plays a violent style of football that is necessary for undersized linebacker’s in the league.
