Round 5 / Pick 166: Armon Watts, DT, Arkansas

Although the Chargers went with Jeffery Simmons in round one, they currently only have three defensive tackles on the roster. Armon Watts brings great size at 6’5, 300 pounds to the defensive line. On top of the size, he has the athleticism to play up and down the defensive line.

Watts finished the 2018 season with 49 tackles, 7 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles. At the Senior Bowl, Watts impressed many scouts with his strength during the practice sessions.

With the Chargers losing three of their defensive tackles this offseason, that is a group they need to rebuild through the draft after showing little desire to do so in free agency.

As of now the projected starting defensive tackles for the Chargers are 34-year old Brandon Mebane and last year’s third-round pick, Justin Jackson. Even if Watts doesn’t get much playing time this season, with Mebane turning 35 at the end of the 2019 season, Watts could make an impact down the road for the Chargers.
