2019 NFL Draft: Three potential surprise No. 1 overall picks
By Joel Deering
2. Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State
The Arizona Cardinals have been considering taking a QB in the 2019 NFL Draft for pretty much the entire offseason. The recent reports that they’re backing off taking Kyler Murray may lead us to think they’re going with another position, but what if they’re backing off Kyler Murray to go with another QB?
This wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen the team with the No. 1 pick put all the attention on a couple guys, just to surprise us and go another direction. It was just last season that we saw the Cleveland Browns surprise us by taking Baker Mayfield. All the talk about who the Browns would take was about Sam Darnold, Josh Allen and Saquon Barkley. Baker Mayfield wasn’t anywhere near as talked about as the No. 1 overall pick, but that’s where he ended up being drafted.
Recent talks about Dwayne Haskins have seen his draft stock falling, but none of us should be shocked if he ends up being the QB the Cardinals select with the first pick. Haskins might not be a runner, but he’s got a big arm and can make all the throws. Those are the kind of QBs Kliff Kingsbury loves.
I’m not calling Haskins Patrick Mahomes, but he does have the ability to fit right into a Kingsbury led offense. Haskins threw for 4,831 yards and 50 TDs at Ohio State last season. He broke all sorts of records while throwing the ball all over the yard. A QB who can throw the ball all over the yard is a QB who Kliff Kingsbury is attracted to, and we shouldn’t be surprised if Haskins ends up being his guy.
