Arizona Cardinals: Do the right thing and draft Kyler Murray
Rumors are circulating that the Arizona Cardinals have dialed back on taking Heisman winning Quarterback Kyler Murray. Let’s clear that up.
The Arizona Cardinals made their draft decision for the number one overall pick on January 14th, when the best player in college football, Kyler Murray, decided to take his talents to the gridiron over the baseball diamond (A decision I still think was the better of the two).
This move could be called a lot of things: hasty, impulsive, aggressive, even bad for some.
All of those opinions considered, it’s the right one.
Murray is not just “another” QB prospect. He has game-changing talent and is being doubted due to height, the same thing that got Brock Osweiler drafted over Russell Wilson. Yikes.
This first overall pick has a few wrinkles to it that can’t be overlooked.
First: Not the Rosen one?
The Cardinals do have a signal caller on their roster in Josh Rosen, the 10th overall pick of last years draft class. Rosen didn’t have the best year but while he wasn’t in the best situation he still showed some promise and has the talent to be a good player in the NFL.
Murray has the talent to be great.
While Arizona has not said the words “Josh Rosen is available” the QB has garnered some interest around the league.
Arizona is looking for a first round pick but if they don’t get offered that or close to it the idea of having both QB’s on the roster to spark competition has been thrown around.
Hard Knocks anyone?
A legit QB competition could be interesting until Kyler pulls away since he is the better player. Whether it’s at practice or in a preseason game, once Kyler makes a “wow” throw over Rosen’s “good” throw, that’s all the evidence the coaching staff will need. Speaking of coaching staff…
Second: The Coach who would be King(sbury)
At this point we have all seen the clip of new Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury saying:
“Kyler is a freak…..I would take him with the first pick of the draft if I could.”
High praise for sure with a side of foreshadowing? I think so and so does a large part of the scouting/draft community. It’s no secret Kingsbury loves Murray and everything he brings to the game, he is the man for his fast-paced, quick hitting, spread offense that already includes David Johnson, Christian Kirk and Larry Fitzgerald (Larry Legend, actually).
Is the Kingsbury hire a direct result of the success of the Sean McVay? Hell yeah man, no argument. Everyone wants to strike gold with a new young offensive Head Coach.
Will he have the same success? We’ve all gotta wait and see (probably not, McVay is a wunderkind), but the best way to ensure a coach at least some success is to get him the best players for his system.
Murray isn’t just a piece of Kingsbury’s offense, he could be the entire puzzle.
This decision is the type that can change a franchise. NFL owners care about two things: Wealth & Wins. The second Murray is drafted, he is going to put fans in the stands, double merchandise sales with is electrifying ability and talent.
There are those calling for the drafting of Ohio State edge rusher Nick Bosa or Alabama’s Interior beast Quinnen Williams who are both fantastic players in their own right, but will they lead to wins?
- Aaron Donald is the best defensive player in the NFL and he just lost the Superbowl while his quarterback, Jared Goff, who is very good, could have won the game for his team.
- Khalil Mack is a freak of nature and one of the most feared men in NFL, his team lost on a last-second field goal.
- The Texans have had both JJ Watt and Jadeveon Clowney yet they started winning more when DeShaun Watson came into town.
Defensive players are incredible and the game is better with their stars shining, but if the goal is to hoist the Lombardi, a star is needed under center and Kyler Murrays star shines brighter than any we have seen in some time.
