New York Giants deciding between two QBs with the 6th pick?
Despite all indications to the contrary this offseason, are the New York Giants down to either Dwayne Haskins or Daniel Jones at pick no. 6?
All offseason, the New York Giants have been playing with everyone’s minds and emotions, leaving everyone wondering what in the world they are trying to do with their two first-round picks.
The Giants have the 6th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft based on their 2019 record, and they own the 17th overall pick after trading Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns. It’s been widely assumed they would eventually take a quarterback with one of their selections, but not necessarily with that top pick.
Now, it seems, the tides have turned.
Listening to Ian Rapoport explain what he’s heard from sources around the league about the Giants’ intentions with the 6th overall pick — and for those who didn’t listen, he essentially said people around the league feel like Dwayne Haskins and Daniel Jones are top options — it certainly sounds like the Giants are poised to go quarterback at six.
Daniel Jeremiah’s latest mock draft had the Giants taking Jones with the sixth overall pick, and that pick isn’t made on a whim — Jeremiah is connected.
The Giants have done more than just due diligence on this year’s quarterbacks. They have brought these guys in to convince them they need to take a leap forward this year and start building towards a new era of football in New York.
This is the perfect time to do it, as long as the Giants are truly bought into one of these guys as their franchise quarterback. I’m not sure why they wouldn’t be sold on Drew Lock if they like Jones, but that’s just personal preference.
If the Giants want a quarterback in this draft, they can’t afford to care what anyone else thinks and they need to draft him at 6. They aren’t likely to get a blue chip player like Quinnen Williams or Josh Allen at that pick, so unless they view Ed Oliver on an ‘elite’ tier, they have to leave him on the board in favor of a quarterback.
Otherwise, you risk missing out on the guy you want to build your franchise around, or you’ll have to trade a king’s ransom to move back up and get him.
I don’t necessarily see the value in Jones at pick number 6 overall, and maybe not even for Haskins, but the Giants understand that something has to be done.
Haskins makes sense because he’s a local product who has been vocal about wanting to be part of the team and part of the process, learning behind Eli Manning.
Jones makes sense because he’s literally been working and training under Manning and Manning’s coach for years. The guy was a counselor at the Manning passing academy.
He even looks like a Manning sometimes out there on the field.
One way or another the Giants know they need a quarterback and even if this year’s class isn’t the best we’ll ever see, the timing might be such that the Giants have to get their guy now and start putting a plan into motion.
