Round 4, Pick #119: Max Scharping, OT Northern Illinois

This may be a small school kid, but he ain’t so small. At 6’6 327 pounds he somehow plays even bigger. Now, when it comes to non-power 5 football, scouts tend to stick their noses up, so it’s all to be taken with a grain of salt when you see him seem to be almost bored at times in pass pro in college.

He did get his fair share of “big boy” football though against Florida State this past season where he took a handful of successful snaps against the first rounder Brian Burns and held him sackless.

He most definitely looks the part and he’s aware enough to know it. He does a phenomenal job of using his size in the running game, especially on down blocks. In the passing game, he’s passionate though sometimes waits too long to strike and therefore loses to the bull rush on occasion.

Nonetheless, the Browns have a major investment at the quarterback position, why not take a stab at protecting him a bit?
