First round: Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, S, Florida

What the Seattle Seahawks lost in Earl Thomas won’t be replaced in anyone’s rookie season, but Chauncey Gardner-Johnson might be as good of a replacement as the team could ask for in this draft class.

It’s going to be tough for the Seahawks to use their first round pick (21st overall) to move down and possibly try to acquire more picks because the further they move down, the more they risk not being able to get Gardner-Johnson.

Like Thomas, Gardner-Johnson is not just strictly a safety — he’s a defensive weapon.

He can match up in just about any situation, showing throughout his Florida career the type of versatility and athleticism to move around the defensive formation.

This would be a great get for the Seahawks, who showed last year they are not afraid to reach a little bit for a position they feel is a strong need. Last year they took Rashad Penny about two rounds before anyone thought he would come off the board.

This reach is not as drastic, and in fact, there are some who believe Gardner-Johnson to be a top 25 player in this draft.

He fills a big hole for the Seahawks and even bigger shoes.
