Washington Redskins mock draft: More Alabama emphasis in 2019
By Craig Stofko
ROUND 5 Pick 153: CHRISTIAN MILLER, OLB, Alabama
Like many players at Alabama, Miller had to wait his turn to get steady playing time. He made the most of his senior year collecting 9 sacks, 12 QBH, 36 tackles and 11.5 TFL. He’s another guy that is ranked all over various boards but I think his durability issues will drop him into the 5th round.
He would be the perfect back up to Ryan Anderson. Both need to work on their pass rushing moves but both excel at setting the edge, a critical skill in Washington’s 3-4 scheme. Preston Smith had a similar game. He only posted 4 sacks last year but few running backs ever made it around the edge.
Anderson and Miller represent a tandem that could set a granite edge and pressure QBs enough to allow the Redskins fearsome defensive line to gobble up quarterbacks.
ROUND 5 Pick 173: GARY JENNINGS, WR, West Virginia
I’ve said repeatedly in previous mocks that I like the potential that Washington has in their WR group. If Cam Sims and Robert Davis can stay healthy I think they could relegate Paul Richardson and Josh Doctson to back up roles. But, potential don’t pay the bills.
Despite all the promise they have yet to prove anything. They are both big, strong, fast, run good routes, have great hands, and are excellent blockers. But, as Redskins fans know all too well, all that talent don’t mean squat when it’s sitting on IR.
Gary Jennings is another big, strong, fast wide receiver with good hands. Watching him reminds a little of a young Pierre Garçon. He’s a good route runner and he’s tough as nails. Bringing him on board would elevate the entire WR group. I don’t have any trouble at all envisioning him winning a starting role on this team.
