2019 NFL Draft: First Team Offense
Left Tackle: Andre Dillard, Wash St.
My mom used to tell me that I would literally talk myself to sleep at night, so it’s no wonder I still haven’t shut up to this day. Some of us are just born to do something and do it really well. Andre Dillard was born to pass block and pass block really well.
Just how good was Andre Dillard at pass blocking in college? Well, Washington State threw the ball 478 times in 13 games this past season. For you math wizards, that’s just under 37 pass attempts per game. The Washington State offensive line allowed just 13 sacks, none of them coming from over the top of Dillard.
Is he ever going to be the league’s best run blocker? Nope. But let me ask you this, how much of David Bakhtiari’s success in the NFL has to do with his run blocking ability? I’ll give you the answer: none. Last season, Pro Football Focus ranked Bahktiari as the #1 pass blocking left tackle in the NFL with a 93.6 grade.
However, he finished just 20th in the NFL with a 68.1 grade in the run game, which is hardly average.
So, where do you think Bakhtiari ended up on the overall PFF rankings for tackles? Numero uno. Why? Because keeping your quarterback clean is far and away the most important thing a left tackle does. It’s a passing league, right? We talk about it all the time. I just don’t see the need to over complicate things here.
