9. Dallas Cowboys

player. 123. . LB. Ohio State. Bobby Carpenter . 9

Bill Parcells is one of the greatest coaches in NFL history with a tremendous eye for talent. Even he isn’t perfect though. The Dallas Cowboys felt they had something building going into the 2006 season. Unfortunately, when getting Bobby Carpenter at 18th overall, he was influenced by his past, having coached the young man’s father.  One could argue Carpenter would’ve gone far later than that had Parcells not pushed for his selection.

Carpenter could best be called a “tweener.” He had good size for an outside linebacker in a 4-3 scheme but not quite for the 3-4 the Cowboys played in. That became apparent during his rookie year. Carpenter never became a starter and served as a role player in a rotation, doing a number of jobs. Not exactly befitting of a 1st round pick. Proof that even a team like the Cowboys isn’t immune to major failure.
