The worst NFL draft pick of all time by every team
By Erik Lambert
6. Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears were in a state of QB misery by the late 1990s. While they were trotting out guys like Steve Walsh and Rick Mirer, their division opponents were putting up Brett Favre, Brad Johnson, Randall Cunningham, and Warren Moon. Even Scott Mitchell had a good year in Detroit. The Bears wanted one of their own and in 1999 they were determined to get one. Even if he happened to be the fifth quarterback off the board by that point.
It’s true. Cade McNown went 12th overall to the Bears. Donovan McNabb, Daunte Culpepper, Tim Couch, and Akili Smith had all gone before him. So it should’ve been a red flag right away that they may have overreached for a player who never should’ve gone that high. McNown had a solid career at UCLA but he was undersized and not heralded for his football commitment. He proved that by surviving just two seasons in the league, throwing 16 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.
