The worst NFL draft pick of all time by every team
By Erik Lambert
32. Washington Redskins
The Washington Redskins made a mistake when they drafted Heath Shuler in 1994. They thought that the organization, in general, had certain magic with quarterbacks. It couldn’t possibly have been the able coaching of future Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs that made it all work. If they’d not been blinded to that fact, they might’ve seen the pitfalls of Shuler from the start. For one, it wasn’t like he lit the world on fire during his time at Tennessee. He had one good year.
Not great. Good.
When he got to Washington, it became apparent early on he didn’t have the mental acuity to handle the speed of the NFL. Despite being sacked only 12 times in 11 games his rookie year, he still threw more interceptions than touchdowns. Things only got worse after that. As his struggles mounted, calls grew louder for backup Gus Frerotte to step in. The Redskins finally made the switch midway through 1995 and Shuler was gone by the end of 1996.
His final NFL season saw him throw two touchdowns to 14 interceptions in nine starts for New Orleans.
