14. Indianapolis Colts

46. . QB. Ohio State. Art Schlichter . 14. player

No one can say Art Schlichter was a one-year wonder or anything like that. He had a full career at Ohio State and played a string of solid seasons despite them never being a pass-first program. Schlichter had the tools. He was big, could run, and had a solid arm. A book was even written about him being a remarkably straight-laced person. A good, old American boy. The problem is the allure of adult life and sports stardom has some gigantic pitfalls.

From the outset, it became clear that something was wrong with Schlichter. He was struggling a lot on the field. Far more than people had ever seen in college. It soon became apparent the reason for this was his focus wasn’t on football. Schlichter had developed a massive gambling addiction. One that caused him to get suspended multiple times by the league and eventually banned. His NFL career ended in 1985 with him having thrown just five touchdown passes.

Not the best return for the Indianapolis Colts on the #4 pick.
