11. Detroit Lions

WR. Michigan State. Charles Rogers . 11. player. 50.

Matt Millen made many mistakes in his long run as GM of the Detroit Lions, but the one thing he did that drew the most ire from fans was his inability to stop taking wide receivers in the 1st round. This at a time when the team had loads of more pressing needs elsewhere. The height of the misery came in 2003 when they took Rogers 2nd overall. That’s not a misprint. A team took a wide receiver with the #2 overall pick in the draft.

To be fair Rogers was a stud at Michigan State, posting over 2,700 yards and 27 touchdowns in two years. Still, that wasn’t enough justification for the move. Especially when they couldn’t even get the right receiver. Andre Johnson went at the next pick to Houston. Rogers played just three seasons in the NFL and caught 36 passes. Terrell Suggs? Troy Polamalu? Jordan Gross? All were available if Millen had just gotten his head out of the receiver pool.
