San Francisco 49ers top first round options in 2019 NFL Draft

4. Trade Down

If the 49ers decide none of the defensive players are for them, they could trade down and things could get interesting from that point.

What would motivate them to trade down?

Perhaps the 49ers don’t feel they have enough picks in this draft to adequately fill out their roster the way they want, or perhaps they feel the second overall pick is too rich for the player they truly covet in this draft class.

Someone like DK Metcalf, who absolutely wrecked the Scouting Combine, wouldn’t necessarily be a good value at no. 2 overall but is someone the Niners could target in a trade down scenario where they pick up an additional second round pick and then some.

Last year, the New York Jets bought the 3rd overall pick from the Indianapolis Colts for two second-round picks in the 2018 NFL Draft and a second-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

That’s pretty good value if the 49ers can get something like that, and they could really re-shape their roster with that kind of capital.
