Did New Era get it right with the 2019 NFL Draft caps?
Did New Era get it right with their 2019 NFL Draft cap line? Let’s take a look at their designs for this year’s draft picks to wear on stage.
The 2018 NFL Draft caps from New Era were all about each team’s fan base. The design was fairly simple — a gray hat with a phrase or slogan to represent each fan base the way they recognize themselves.
“Raider Nation” and “Broncos Country” are two examples of the names put on the front of these draft caps, which were simple if even to the point of being boring, but New Era went all out for the 2019 NFL Draft.
This year’s caps have a ‘state flag’ theme, and not everyone’s is great.
The NFL is also selling t-shirts with the phrase, “The Pick Is In” inside of a guitar pick.
Do you get it? Because, Nashville, and music, and guitar picks, and draft picks.
All kidding aside, the NFL’s marketing department and whoever is working with New Era here has got to steal someone away from a trendier company like ’47 Brand or Mitchell & Ness or something like that, because the NFL is getting further and further away from what is cool.
Or perhaps they’re shooting for the ‘artist not appreciated in their own time’ style.
Maybe 10 years down the road, these hats will be highly desirable vintage items.
I have to say, however, not all of these designs are bad, and not all of the designs are New Era’s fault. These people are told to work with the state flag for each team, so some of these hat designs are just making lemonade with lemons.
With that said, there are designs like Atlanta’s above that are extremely cool.
Some others that stand out as really awesome are the Washington Redskins, Jacksonville Jaguars, Denver Broncos, and Arizona Cardinals.
Another nice touch for each team is that in addition to team colors, these designs come in alternate colors to match each team’s state flag.
Did New Era get it right this year? As always, in some cases they absolutely nailed it. Some other designs are tough to stomach.
If you’re an Eagles fan, I’m sorry. You can’t in good conscience spend nearly $40 on a draft hat this year. It’s just not worth how terrible it will look on your head.
If you’re a Jacksonville fan, wear this hat with pride.
