Action Plan

There are certainly no shortage of options for the Giants in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, but they do need to be very strategic about their direction.

If New York wants a quarterback of the future, they will likely need to move up off of the 17th selection to get him.

This draft presents an opportunity for New York to secure a defensive cornerstone piece in the top 10 and take advantage of the lack of supply and demand at quarterback by getting one on the edge of the top 10 or just outside of it.

If I were Dave Gettleman, I wouldn’t have traded Odell Beckham Jr., but at the same time, the deed is done and the Giants are moving forward.

In this draft, I would use my first round picks like this:

1st round (6th overall): Montez Sweat, EDGE, Mississippi State
1st round (trade up): Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State

If the Giants pass on an edge player at 6, they aren’t going to be able to get someone nearly as good at 17 and might even miss out on all of the top guys in general.

This strategy allows them to go after one of the top right tackles still available early on day two, filling out their offensive line.

They could trade up from 17 to, say, 10th overall with the Denver Broncos to secure Haskins, thus giving them the ideal first round for a ‘rebuilding’ team, one that includes a cornerstone piece for the future on both offense and defense.
