New York Giants urged to trade for Josh Rosen
By Erik Lambert
Dave Gettleman continues to prove his remarkable stubbornness as a GM for the New York Giants. His approach has a lot of people upset.
Not only did he allow Landon Collins, a three-time Pro Bowl safety to go into free agency without the franchise tag. He continues to insist the team can and will move forward with Eli Manning at quarterback. This despite consistent evidence that the former star just doesn’t have the same juice he once did. People are clamoring for a changing of the guard, but Gettleman has said that he is always wary of drafting quarterbacks high because of how a miss can set a team back.
So what about possibly trading for somebody? A quarterback who has the advantage of experience but also youth. Adam Rank of NFL.com seems to think the best option the Giants could hope for is Josh Rosen out in Arizona. The former 10th overall pick started a number of games last year and showed promise. However, a change of the coaching staff has led to rampant speculation that the Cardinals could end up drafting Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray.
This would obviously make Rosen available with some speculating it could cost as little as a 3rd round pick to get him. That sounds like something even Gettleman could get behind. Hence why Adam Rank of NFL.com has them as his #1 landing spot.
"“This seems like the most obvious fit. Many questioned the Giants’ selection of Saquon Barkley in last year’s draft — not because of Barkley himself (he’s awesome), but because Big Blue chose to use the second overall pick on a running back instead of snagging a quarterback of the future. The Giants could now have the best of both worlds: a generational running back and a QB to take the torch from 38-year-old Eli Manning.”"
Rosen has the talent but does he have the head for handling New York
From a pure football perspective, this makes plenty of sense. Rosen is going into his second years. He’s young and still plenty moldable for an offensive-minded coach like Pat Shurmur. It seems like a strong potential match. However, it’s important to remember that New York can be a particularly unforgiving city. Playing quarterback there takes a certain degree of mental toughness. Something that Manning had in spades throughout his career.
Does Rosen have that? It’s still up for debate. There were questions following him out of UCLA about his questionable commitment to football. If things don’t go well quickly in New York, would he be able to withstand the obvious pressure from that ravenous media? There’s no way to know for sure. If the Giants truly aren’t sold on Manning for another year, then this is a move they have to make.
