The moment the Chicago Bears signed young kicker Redford Jones during their first tryouts a few weeks ago, it was obvious that Cody Parkey was gone.

Sure enough, the veteran was informed of his release not too long after. The position is wide open and it seems the team is ready to give anybody and everybody a chance to prove they deserve it.

With free agency right around the corner, GM Ryan Pace struck again. After another string of tryouts, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reported that the team had signed for Pitt kicker Chris Blewitt. For those rearing back in shock? Yes that’s his actual name and we can also agree there was never a better (or worse) one created for an NFL kicker.

It’s unusual that Blewitt would be the man who surfaces in this instance. If anyone has lived up to their last name, it would be him. He never finished a college season at Pitt with an accuracy rate higher than 78% and his senior year was the worst of them all, connecting on just 58.8%. He even missed six extra points, and these are of the old chip shot variety too. Not the NFL-style.

So either he drastically improved over the past two years in his approach or the Bears are literally trolling everybody with their first two additions of this offseason. Either way, it’s at least another body thrown at the problem. Competition tends to bring out the best in athletes and this may be the best approach possible for solving the issue.

Regardless, the odds of Blewitt actually winning the job are remoted. The Bears are certain to add one or even two more to the competition before training camp. Likely both coming from the 2019 college class. They don’t intend to leave anything to chance.
