NFL Compensatory Picks: The best every team has ever had
By Erik Lambert
Thomas DeCoud (S, Atlanta Falcons)
A compensatory pick at the end of the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft, Thomas DeCoud played six seasons in the NFL for the Atlanta Falcons. That was the same NFL Draft class that produced Matt Ryan and effectively, a new era for the Falcons.
From 2009-14, DeCoud was a highly productive player at the free safety position. In that timeframe, he missed just one game and racked up 292 tackles, 14 interceptions, and four forced fumbles.
He made the Pro Bowl in 2012 when he had a career-high six interceptions and nine pass breakups.
Sam Koch (P, Baltimore Ravens)
Punters are people, too.
The Baltimore Ravens have long been respected as one of the best drafting teams in the NFL, and they know how to maximize their use of compensatory draft picks.
Koch, a Nebraska native who played his college ball in Lincoln for the Cornhuskers, was selected by the Ravens in the sixth round of the 2006 NFL Draft, and he’s been with the team ever since.
The Ravens found themselves one of the best punters in the league and since he was drafted, he hasn’t missed a single game.
He helped the Ravens win a Super Bowl in 2012 and made a Pro Bowl in 2015.
