The 49ers were convinced they had everybody fooled when they got Reuben Foster late in the 1st round of the draft a few years ago. He was simply a misunderstood kid who needed to grow up. Except other NFL teams didn’t see that. They saw a kid with serious character question marks who had a short temper and no idea how to function without constant structure.

As a result, the young linebacker got in trouble with the law twice and was subsequently cut. Now San Francisco has a glaring hole at linebacker. John Lynch knows he has to fix this mistake as quickly as possible. Signing a four-time Pro Bowler in Anthony Barr would count as a nice counter move. Not only do the 49ers have the money to lure him in, but he also went to school at UCLA. So he’d be coming home to California.
