The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a painful end to their 2018 season, leaving some to wonder what is next for the organization moving forward.

Nothing but optimism it seems. Why shouldn’t there be? The team went 12-4 and claimed homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. They took the eventual champion New England Patriots into overtime in the AFC championship game with a defense that was frankly never good enough to win a championship. They have a star-studded offense led by Patrick Mahomes who threw 50 touchdown passes in his first official year playing.

Andy Reid remains there to guide him along the way. With him in charge, this team should remain in the thick of the playoff picture moving forward. The big question is can they achieve what this organization has failed to for going on 50 years now? Can they win a Super Bowl championship? The MMQB asked their entire staff what the next five years will look like in terms of future champions.

A considerable number of them (6 of 10) had them not just winning one, but two Lombardi trophies in that window. Mitch Goldich explained the reasoning.

"“Like everyone else, I’m looking at quarterbacks first and foremost. I think Patrick Mahomes is going to be the best in the league over the next five years, and given the other pieces around him, I put the Chiefs down for two. Most five-year stretches in Super Bowl history include a repeat winner, so I’d put my money on them.”"

Kansas City Chiefs are absolute favorites to get at least one

There’s no denying the logic here. Outside of Deshaun Watson, there isn’t another young quarterback in the AFC making near the waves that Mahomes is. Throw in the fact that Tom Brady continues to steadily show his age a little more each year and it’s only a matter of time before the mighty Patriots fall. As the saying goes, all empires eventually crumble. It’s inevitable.

There is a bit of an issue with the logic presented though. There hasn’t been a repeat winner of the Super Bowl in the NFL since the 2003-2004 New England Patriots teams. That means from 2005 to 2018, there hasn’t been a single repeat winner. A span of 13 years. That’s two five-year runs without one. So his argument is in considerable danger of going 0-3.

Regardless, the Chiefs are in as good a position to strike gold multiple times as any other in the NFL. If Mahomes can maintain his level of play and the defense improves? The drought may finally end.
