Coach of the Year: Jay Gruden
The Washington Redskins went 7-9 in 2018 and here’s the thing. They shouldn’t have. They weren’t an overly talented team to begin with and then they lost not one but two of their quarterbacks to season-ending injuries. This forced them to pluck Josh Johnson off the scrap heap in free agency and even he was able to get them winning. They had no business being in the NFC East hunt but they were, and that’s because of the steadfast coaching of Jay Gruden.
For all the hype his brother gets, Jay has done a tremendous job with rather mediocre rosters most of his time in Washington. He turned Kirk Cousins into a Pro Bowler. He revived the career of Adrian Peterson. If the Redskins can find him even a modest talent at quarterback, the odds are Gruden will be able to get the most out of him. That’s why when they make the playoffs against all odds in 2019 he’ll get his well-deserved Coach of the Year honor.
