Everybody knows by now that the Washington Redskins are in a massive pickle regarding their quarterback situation going into 2019.

They had planned to ride with Alex Smith for the next few years as they set about reloading the roster with young talent. That plan went right to the shredder when Smith broke his leg at the end of last season. If that weren’t bad enough, there were complications during surgery to repair the injury, resulting in an infection that nearly cost him his entire leg. Now people are left wondering if he’ll be back at all. Never mind the upcoming season.

Thus the Redskins are forced into a difficult situation. They have nobody on the roster that could be remotely considered a long-term replacement. That means they have to go find one. The draft likely won’t produce anybody who can help them win right away. Free agency is possible but the options are few and the Redskins don’t exactly have a strong case to make. That just leaves the trade market.

Joe Flacco picked as the best option out there for Redskins

More from NFL Mocks

Jeremy Bergman of NFL.com is of the belief that the Redskins will be forced to make an aggressive play for a quarterback this year, and the name that makes the most sense is Joe Flacco. The veteran former Baltimore Ravens starter lost his job in 2018 to rookie Lamar Jackson. It’s now clear the team will be moving forward with him, leaving Flacco’s spot on the team unlikely to remain in his possession for long.

"“Pressured to act by reported pursuit of Flacco from Miami and Denver, Bruce Allen and Doug Williams will overpay for the 34-year-old QB before Baltimore releases him, taking on Flacco’s $26.5 million cap hit. The ‘Skins have eyes on the QB prospects working out at the combine, and Washington’s front office will spend its remaining draft capital to try to find the QB of the future. But in the meantime, while Smith’s leg heals and a competitive Redskins outfit waits for a leader, Washington will employ a humdrum son of the mid-Atlantic.”"

Flacco really showed signs of regression over his final few years with the Ravens. To be fair not all of it was his fault. Baltimore routinely had issues surrounding him with proper weapons or offensive coaching. Perhaps joining Jay Gruden, who can speak the quarterback language is exactly what he needs to regain the form that once made him a Super Bowl champion.
