03: Saving New Orleans

There was so much backstory packed into the 2009 New Orleans Saints during their trip to Super Bowl XLIV. Not only were they the organization tagged as the perennial losers of the NFL. They were also carrying the burden of a city that still hadn’t fully recovered from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina back in 2005. One of the most destructive storms in U.S. history. Never mind the fact that New Orleans had never won a major sports championship.

Their task looked daunting. They faced an Indianapolis Colts team that had cruised through their schedule to a 14-2 record and beaten both of their playoff opponents handily. They had MVP Peyton Manning under center. it looked almost impossible. Everybody loves that underdog story, after all. In the end, the Saints used swagger, brilliant QB play of their own from Drew Brees, and a ballsy onside kick to march their way to a championship.
