The last time the Chicago Bears took a chance on an undersized kid named Singletary from the south, they got an all-time great.

Naturally, no one would expect Devin Singletary to be anything close to Mike Singletary. The point of this is, the Bears could be the absolute perfect fit for the running back out of Florida Atlantic. Everybody is aware of the situation as it stands. Jordan Howard is in the final year of his rookie contract. There have been several hints dropped by head coach Matt Nagy that he’d like to get a running back with more versatility involved on offense.

Why else would he willingly put somebody like Taquan Mizzell on the field to take valuable snaps away from guys like Howard and Tarik Cohen? It’s clear he is seeking something different at that position. This would explain why Nagy wasn’t so quick to flatly deny any interest in polarizing free agent Kareem Hunt. While he awaits punishment for his involvement in the violent confrontation with a woman at a hotel in Cleveland, many ponder where he could sign next.

It’s going to happen. Hunt is way too young and talented not to end up somewhere eventually. It feels like the Bears are going to be his option of choice if they simply open the door. However, if GM Ryan Pace isn’t anxious to go down that route, then he’ll need to find an alternative.

Devin Singletary fits what the Bears are looking for at RB

The challenge at hand for the Bears is simple. They have no 1st or 2nd round picks. So if they’re going to get a top contributor at running back, it will have to be in the middle rounds. That’s likely where the name Singletary will come up. The Florida Atlantic running back isn’t the top name for many in this 2019 draft class but he’s definitely one of those under the radar types people in the know are aware of.

In three years, the 5’9 running back has amassed 4,287 yards rushing with 66 touchdowns. He also caught 51 passes for an additional 397 yards. He’s quick and versatile with underrated speed and his 714 carries proves he can handle heavy workloads without wearing down. If nothing else, it’s a virtual certainty he’ll he will be an upgrade over Mizzell. Together with Cohen that could be a potent combination, and at a fairly reasonable price with no off-the-field baggage.
