08. Junior Seau (Chargers, Dolphins, and Patriots)

These days when most people think about the name Junior Seau, they only remember the tragedy of his death when he committed suicide. It’s such a shame because that overshadows how brilliant he was as a player. It could easily be argued he was the greatest outside linebacker of his generation throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s. He amassed 1,846 tackles, 58.5 sacks, 18 interceptions, and was a six-time All-Pro.

Yet when it came to getting that elusive ring, he had some of the worst luck imaginable. During his peak years with the Chargers, he made it to the big game in 1994. Unfortunately, he ran into a runaway freight train that was the San Francisco 49ers that year, who hung 49 points on his defense. It would then take him another 13 years for him to get back as part of the 2007 undefeated Patriots team.

That should’ve been his crowning moment. Then Eli Manning and David Tyree ruined the coronation with the now iconic “Helmet Catch.” The vision of him lying face down on the field after the defeat still rouses strong emotions to this day.
