The Chicago Bears know that their margin for error in the 2019 NFL draft is drastically reduced without 1st or 2nd round picks to use.

Both were traded away the previous year in deals for Khalil Mack and Anthony Miller. Deals they don’t regret in the slightest, but nevertheless, it makes this rendition of the draft more challenging. They only have five picks total and most of them are at the back end of each round due to their success at making the playoffs this past season. This means GM Ryan Pace will have to do some of his best work to find some quality talent.

Here is an updated look at how things could go this April.

3rd round

57. . S. Iowa. Amani Hooker . 1. player

The Bears have some tough decisions to make regarding their secondary in the next couple of months. One of which is the fate of starting safety Adrian Amos. It’s unclear if the team will be able to keep him long-term what with their limited amount of salary cap space. If that turns out to not be the case, then they will almost certainly look for help at the position early in the draft. It’s not the strongest class for safeties, but there are some hidden gems floating around.

One of them is unquestionably Amani Hooker. The thing to remember about Chuck Pagano is he likes to use his defensive backs aggressively. This demands a safety who can play well both in coverage and around the line of scrimmage. Hooker is just that sort of player. Not only is he deceptively dangerous in coverage, but he has a strong knack as a blitzer as well. He clearly has instincts for the game and is only 20-years old.
