Cleveland Browns: Hue Jackson did not go quietly after firing
By Erik Lambert
The Cleveland Browns may have made the right decision when they chose to fire Hue Jackson as their head coach. That doesn’t mean everybody agreed.
At least one person felt the move was unnecessarily and that, of course, was Jackson himself. It’s hard to know for sure how he kept the job at all following that 0-16 season but it seems his fancy words finally lost their value by the end of last October. GM John Dorsey along with owner Jimmy Haslem went to meet with the embattled head coach to deliver the message that he was gone.
Except things aren’t always that easy. According to Seth Wickersham of ESPN, the meeting didn’t exactly run as smooth as the two men would’ve hoped. Jackson not only took the news with genuine shock, he seemed to get agitated when given the reason why the decision was made during the season. His final response seemed to send a clear enough message.
"So according to people briefed on the meeting, on Oct. 29, Haslam and general manager John Dorsey entered Jackson’s office and told him the team was going to move in a different direction.Jackson asked why he was being fired. The team quit on you, Dorsey replied. At the time, four of the eight Browns games had gone to overtime.“Get the f— out of my office,” Jackson said."
Hue Jackson may not like it but the evidence is clear enough
No coach would ever like being told that players quit on them. It doesn’t reflect well on their job. Especially someone who’s been doing it as long as Jackson has. There’s no denying the reality though. The team clearly had tuned him out towards the end this season. All one has to do is look at the reactions of players like Baker Mayfield and Damarious Randall for an idea of just how happy they were that he was finally gone.
The Browns finished the year strong, winning more game in just that stretch than they had during Jackson’s entire run as head coach. Maybe he’s not a terrible coach in general, but that evidence alone makes it clear he’s a terrible head coach. Anybody that gives him a chance to a run a team after this deserves what they get, which won’t be much.
It’s unfortunate the man couldn’t handle his dismissal with a little more dignity and class. Then again after enduring the amazing string of distractions and controversies in that organization, one can imagine his nerves were fried at that point.
